Stella Maris's grade eight Social Studies Teacher, Mr. Luther, and his students are currently overseeing an "Empowerment Project" where they are fundraising to sponsor a Child with Plan Canada. This is the third year they have sponsored a child and their new child this year is a little girl from India.

While brainstorming in class, student Richard Duke decided to shave his head and raise money for the cause. Mr. Luther initially thought Richard was not serious about losing his lovely black locks but he insisted he wanted to help in his own unique way. Richard's goal was to raise $50 to contribute to the fund but the response to his project was overwhelming and in a matter of a few days and the generosity of the students, staff and the general public he collected approximately $400.

To witness Richard's locks fall to the floor was very moving. His supporters cheered and rocked the walls of the Stella Maris gym as local hair stylist, Heather Murphy, shaved Richard's hair.
